An air shower is a self-contained chamber installed at the entrances of cleanrooms and other controlled environments. It functions by using high-velocity air jets to blow off loose particles, dust, and contaminants from individuals or objects before entering the cleanroom. The air is filtered and recirculated, ensuring minimal particle contamination. Air showers are commonly used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, aerospace, and biotechnology to maintain high cleanliness standards.
How Does an Air Shower Work?
The air shower operates by using high-velocity jets of filtered air, which are blown at the user from different angles through strategically placed nozzles within the chamber. This air, typically filtered using HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) or ULPA (Ultra-Low Penetration Air) filters, effectively dislodges contaminants from clothing, skin, and materials. The dislodged particles are then collected and removed by the air filtration system, ensuring they don’t enter the cleanroom.
Once the decontamination process is complete, the personnel or equipment can exit through the clean side of the air shower, preventing the transfer of contaminants into the controlled environment. The entire process usually takes between 10 to 30 seconds, depending on the design and industry standards.
